Kad kažem H r v a t s k a
ja ne mislim na ništa veliko
ni na brda, ni na doline
jer nema brda, ni dolina
toliko velikih koliko je velika
ta moja Riječ

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
ja ne sanjam ništa vječno
ni prošlo, ni buduće
jer i buduće će jednom
biti prošlo, a što je prošlo
prošlo je jednom zauvijek

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
ja ne urlam kao oni
koji šuplje riječi
bacaju u vjetar

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
srce to žubori sasvim tiho
s više sjete, i strepnje
no prkosa

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
ja znam da to sam ja
moja sestra i moj brat
kao i milijuni drugih
iz zadnjeg vagona nekog vlaka
koji putuju za negdje
gdje ih ne čeka nitko

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
ja čujem glas iz zadnje palube
u mračnoj utrobi nekog davnog
i dalekog parobroda
čija sudbina je vrlo slična
onoj Titanika

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
ja gotovo pipam koliko je život surov
i kako su samo krv, znoj i suze
vredniji od dragulja

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
moja pjesma od sebe se sama
i pjeva i plače

kad kažem H r v a t s k a
da bi moja zemlja bila lijepa
ja znam kako, i za sebe i za druge
u toj pjesmi više no igdje
moram, moram, moram
biti Čovjek

Poem about my country

When I say C r o a t i a
I don’t think of anything great
neither of mountains, nor the valleys
as there’s no mountains, nor the valleys
as grand as it is grand
that Word of mine

when I say C r o a t i a
I don’t dream anything eternally
nor the past or the future
as the future will once
be the past, and what has past
it’s past once forever

when I say C r o a t i a
I don’t scream like those
who trow hollow words
into the wind

when I say C r o a t i a
my heart murmurs it quietly
with more melancholy and anxiety
than defiance

when I say C r o a t i a
I know that this is me
my sister and my brother
like millions of others
from the caboose of some train
travelling to somewhere
where no one is waiting

when I say C r o a t i a
I hear a voice from the last deck
in the dark belly of an ancient
and distant steamship
whose fate is very similar
to the one of the Titanic

when I say C r o a t i a
I almost feel how life is cruel
and how only the blood, sweat and tears
are more precious than jewels

when I say C r o a t i a
my poem itself
sings and cries

when I say C r o a t i a
so that my country would be beautiful
I know how, for myself and for the others
in that poem more than anywhere else
I must, I must, I must
be a Man

Poema sobre mi tierra

Cuando digo C r o a c i a
no pienso en algo grande
ni en los montes ni en los valles
porque no existen montañas ni valles
tan grandes como
esta Palabra mía

cuando digo C r o a c i a
no sueño nada eterno
ni lo pasado, ni el futuro
porque y lo futuro
será pasado, y el pasado,
pasó para siempre

cuando digo C r o a c i a
no vocifero como los
que sus palabras huecas
echan al viento

cuando digo C r o a c i a
mi corazón lo dice en silencio
con más melancolía y temor
que despecho

cuando digo C r o a c i a
sé que eso somos yo
mi hermana y mi hermano
al igual que los millones de gentes
del último vagón de algún tren
que viaja hacia allá, donde
nadie los espera

cuando digo C r o a c i a
oigo una voz desde la última cubierta
en la entraña oscura de un antiguo
y lejano barco de vapor
cuyo destino es muy parecido
a aquel del Titanic

cuando digo C r o a c i a
siento que siento lo cruel que es la vida
y que sólo la sangre, el sudor y las lágrimas
valen más que las joyas

cuando digo C r o a c i a
mi canción por sí misma  canta y llora

cuando digo C r o a c i a
yo sé que, para que mi tierra sea bonita para mí y para los demás,
en este poema más que en cualquier otro lugar
tengo que ser, tengo que ser, tengo que ser
Hombre
